Three companies, including JR Kyushu, have begun construction on an office building on the former site of the Fukuoka Higashi Government  Building on prefectural land near JR Hakata Station. The new building will have one basement floor and 12 stories above ground with a total floor area of approximately 21,000 square meters. The first floor will house cafes and other shops, the second and third floors will house the Prefectural Tax Office and the remaining floors will be rental offices. The project was approved as part of the Hakata Connected redevelopment initiative being promoted by Fukuoka City in the area around the station, and construction is scheduled for completion in March 2024.
